Days out from The Pilgrims

Over the years guests have asked about where they can buy a local delicacy, or the best place to see this or that of interest. We’ve told them what we know and printed out routes to follow or deviate from, and passed on any relevant leaflets we may have.

But we’ve often thought that if we were a bit more organised, we could make suggestions about other diversions you can take in on the same day out. You know what they say about local knowledge.

This is us getting that bit more organised.

  • Within 10 miles or so to the west you get to the famous Somerset Levels, paradise for nature lovers (and photographers) and much more. At Kingsbury Episcopi near Martock you’ll find The Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Burrow Hill Cider, where you can taste and buy these stunning products and, by the way, get a feel for the way things have been done in Somerset for centuries. Probably millennia.

  • A lazy 7 miles from The Pilgrims gets you to Bruton, an interesting and old little town which is now home to Hauser & Wirth’s modern art gallery (Zurich, New York, Mayfair and…Bruton?) The gallery is well worth a look – exhibitions change constantly, the buildings are stunning and Piet Oudolf’s garden is fabulous (he’s the High Line in New York man).
