The Pilgrims

Welcome to The Pilgrims Restaurant site, in which we will try to give you a glimpse of what awaits whether you come to dine with us or to stay awhile. So, are you sitting comfortably? Let me tell you a very short story.

Under the wide open Somerset skies, surrounded by fields, lies the hamlet of Lovington. Originally an old stone pub The Pilgrims is now an award-winning Restaurant with Rooms*. With a passion for the local produce which inspires a menu of unique dishes – and an attention to detail which, should you choose, guarantees a memorable stay. And since The Pilgrims was a pub for most of its many years, we have a bar and a log fire to relax around with an aperitif or after dinner.

We have space to spare but we run a small operation with a very small team. Sally runs the place with a relaxed efficiency that ensures a warm welcome and superb service. Jools’ cooking is based simply on treating stunning local ingredients with the imagination they inspire and the respect they deserve. A menu inspired by the produce grown and reared on our doorstep, and the artisans making cheeses, ciders and smoking eels in the nooks and crannies we’ve gradually discovered. And Stylish? Well, we may be in the country but we can still be civilised about it.

Charles Dowding – The Green Grower

Here we have to declare an interest. Even if Charles didn’t grow the best salads and vegetables we’ve ever tasted, we would still want to see him every week. He’s just one of the nicest men on the planet. He doesn’t believe it but picking up from him on a Friday is a high point of Jools’ week and both the man and the produce provide inspiration in spades. Opening the box to see what we’ve got is like Christmas. How he finds the time to grow all this and run his courses, give lectures and write his books we have no idea. Charles is much, much more than just a supplier.
  • Lyme Regis

    34 miles

We love Lyme and when we get a day off have been known to treat ourselves to a stroll along The Cob, up the hill of a high street, through the park and a late lunch at Mark Hix’s restaurant.

  • Cadbury Castle

    7 miles

One of the front-runners as the site of King Arthur’s Camelot, Cadbury Castle is a Bronze and Iron age hill fort that is visible for miles around. There is only one track up to the earthwork ramparts and plateau at the top, and it can be slippery after rain or when following the cows who graze there. But it’s well worth the effort as the views are wonderful and the place itself has a mysterious quality – it just feels really ancient.
